![]() ![]() There are only five ecosystems in the world where the concentration of these planktons is high enough to be considered bioluminescent bays, and Puerto Rico is home to three of them. So, when you paddle or splash the water, these organisms light up in a neon blue-green color, and so does everything they come in contact with, giving a star-like reflection to the water. The bio bays as they are called contain microscopic, single-celled organisms called dinoflagellates that grow in quantities big enough to produce a glow-in-the-dark effect when stimulated by movement. ![]() Bioluminescent Bayįor a truly unforgettable experience, a visit to a bioluminescent bay in Puerto Rico is a truly memorable excursion. The museum has dedicated areas for toddlers and younger kids, plus plenty for older children and even those in their tweens. In the museum's outdoor grounds, visitors will find a go-kart track, a plane donated by American Airlines, a mini zoo, and a small ferry making jungle cruises through the Blasina Lake and plenty more. ![]() The Museo del Niño de Carolina is Puerto Rico's only dedicated children's museum and it has over 100 hands-on interactive exhibitions ranging from music and art to transportation and physics. ATV tours, archery, and ziplining or some of their more popular offerings. There are a variety of active-adventure activities at Hacienda Campo Rico, a Caribbean Style Hacienda located on the grounds of a former sugar cane plantation. Everyone must be under 235 pounds to ride. Kids have to be three and older to ride and those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. There's also a swimming break halfway through along the Mameyes River. The excursion is under two hours (ideal for kids of all ages) and travelers will get to explore the Carabalí Rainforest as well as the foothills of El Yunque National Forest. CARABALI RAINFOREST ADVENTURE PARKįor active families, horseback riding at Hacienda Carabali is a good option. Horseback riding in the Carabali rainforest is a family-friendly excursion. The scenic views from the tower span across the forest to the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. It has an elevation of 2,493 feet and climbs 594 feet in less than a mile. The observation tower was built in the 1930s by the Conservation Corps and named after famous botanist Nathaniel Britton. The Mount Britton path connects to the El Yunque trail, which leads to the peak (about another hour uphill). The narrow trail is labeled "challenging" by the US Forest System. ![]() It's under a mile and goes through the Sierra Palm and into the cloud forest. Mount Britton and El Yunque Peak is a fan favorite. It's also considered an easy trail, great for younger kids. The Angelito trail is nice because it ends at a natural pool at the Mameyes River. It's a great way for kids to experience the rainforest-there are giant ferns, pretty wildflowers and plenty of streams-without exerting a ton of energy. The Caimitillo trail is an easy one (less than a mile) and is great for little kids. There are several popular family-friendly hikes. Two popular spots include La Coca waterfall (pretty and accessible) and Yokahú Tower, an observation spot that affords great views over the rainforest and east coast of the island. There are waterfalls scattered throughout making it a great spot for pictures.
